Happiness

Find a quiet place and listen. It should be very quiet. The only sound you should hear is your heart beating. Listen. Peer deep down inside your heart. Do you see someone that holds a special place in your heart? Maybe they have always been there when you needed them; maybe they offered words of encouragement; taught you a lesson; comforted you when you were sick; praised you on your accomplishments. Make this their lucky day. You have the POWER to spread happiness today. A quick note or a kind word is all it takes to bring a smile and lasting memory to someone very special. ~ Gary Harrington

Karela (Bitter Gourd) can Beat Breast Cancer

MomordicaImage via Wikipedia
Bitter gourd extract, a common dietary supplement, exerts a significant effect against breast cancer cell growth and may eventually become a chemopreventive agent against breast cancer, according to a recent study.
“Our findings suggest that bitter gourd extract modulates several signal pathways that induces breast cancer cell death,” said researcher Ratna Ray, professor in Department of Pathology at Saint Louis University. “This extract can be utilised as a dietary supplement for the prevention of breast cancer.”
Results of this study are published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Previous research has shown Momordica charantia, also known as bitter gourd and bitter melon, to have hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects, according to Ray. Because of these effects, the extract is commonly used in folk medicines as a remedy for diabetes in locales such as India,
China and Central America, according to the researchers.
Using human breast cancer cells and primary human mammary epithelial cells in a lab, Ray and colleagues found the mechanism of bitter melon extract significantly decreased proliferation, that is, cell growth and division, and induced death in breast cancer cells. These early results offer an encouraging path for research into breast cancer.
“Breast cancer is a major killer among women around the world, and in that perspective, results from this study are quite
significant,” said Rajesh Agarwal, professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado, Denver School of Pharmacy.
“This study may provide us with one more agent that could be used against breast cancer if additional studies hold true.” According to Agarwal, the Cancer Research associate editor for this study, the simple design, clear-cut results and the importance of these findings in breast cancer prevention makes this different from previous research.

Looking Back

the c(o)urse of life.Image by 'PixelPlacebo' via Flickr
A diverse group of senior citizens offered insights that came down to these five points:

  1. Be true to yourself by living with intention. Know your heart's desire and seek it.
  2. Live it with no regrets. Regrets are feared more than death. So mend fences, make peace. Take chances, pursue those dreams, and accept failure as well. Rather than be crushed by failure, learn from it.
  3. Become love. Love is not an emotion but a choice; a way of being that involves seeing ourselves and others with kindness and compassion. That love creates the opportunities to follow your bliss, heal wounds in yourself and others, and to find peace despite challenges and hardships.
  4. Live in the moment. Right here, right. That's all.
  5. Give more than you take. Find yourself and then lose yourself. Once you identify your heart's desire and live your life pursuing it, the chance of accumulating any regrets is reduced. Once you become love, kindness becomes part of your purpose, and each moment offers all the joy of a lifetime. This creates an abundance of resources in the form of love. trust, hope, joy, kindness, and compassion. Draw from this deep well and give it away. Leave the campsite better better than you found it, as one wise elder put it.

8 Reasons why you should Walk

Mist & Morning Walk
Walking is beneficial in so many ways. It’s good for heart, our body and overall health. It’s one of the easiest and most accessible forms of exercise we can do. Most people already walk around all day, so why not us? You can easily burn fat and can get rid of that excessive unwanted calories.
Here are top health benefits of walking:
  1. Walking is an excellent way to manage your weight. There are many negatives with a lot of different exercises, but walking doesn’t have any. In fact, you can walk as much as you want, have time for and are able to. It’s a relatively easy exercise that you can do almost anywhere (even back and forth in your hallway at home) that’s good for your whole body, not just one part. In addition to a 30-60 minute walking on a daily basis, you are also walking throughout the day, which means you’re working out constantly.
Using a pedometer can be beneficial because we now know that we should be walking a minimum of 10,000 steps a day in order for walking to be beneficial to us. Putting your pedometer on in the morning as soon as you get up will let you know how many steps you’re taking. You can make it into sort of a game and try to beat your previous walking record(s).
  2. Walking can help to prevent from diabetes and heart disease. Keeping your weight within healthy limits can help lower your risk for diabetes and heart disease. Walking can also help to control your blood pressure and can be even more effective than some medications (with no side effects).
People who walk regularly also are at lower risk for heart attack. In fact, they are 30 to 40 % less likely to have a heart attack than someone who does not walk regularly for exercise!
  3. Going for a walk helps to lower bad cholesterol levels. We hear a lot of hype about bad cholesterol, but we also need good cholesterol. Regular walking helps to reduce bad cholesterol while giving us more of the good stuff we need.
  4. Regular walking can be helpful in the reduction of risk for stroke. Another health benefit of regular walking is the reduction of risk for stroke. Specialists believe that a 30-60 minute walking at least five or six days a week can cut our risk of stroke by 50 percent.
  5. Regular walking can minimize the risk for breast cancer. In addition to walking cutting the risk of diabetes down, it also can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Walking, paired with a low-fat diet is the way to go if you’re trying to lose weight and stay healthy!
  6. Going for a walk on a daily basis make bones stronger. It also makes our bones stronger, gives us more energy and makes us feel good and sleep better. All-in-all, walking is hands down the best exercise there is. Almost everyone can do it and it is so good for us, you’d be crazy not to!
  7. Daily walking is the best natural source of oxygen. Every cell and tissues of our organism needs the necessary amount of oxygen in order to promote all our body organs to normally function. Fresh air is all-important for everyone, from babies to adults. Especially go for a walk with all your family just after the rain when air is rich in ozone that is very beneficial for total health, including activity of the brain. Let your baby breath in as much oxygen as he can.
  8. Walking is the best work-out for lazy people. Really, many lazy people choose this kind of sports as the main part of their weight loss program. Daily walking really works for everyone, even for the laziest people. The popular health expert Paul Bragg who died at the age of 95 because of surfing accident, recommended walking to everyone who wanted to live healthy and long life.
As you might know, Paul Bragg was giving lectures in many countries of the world. Therefore he spent his daily life mostly in hotels where he didn’t sleep unless he walked in the corridor for minimum 30 minutes a day.

artificial heart that could save lives for just Rs 1 lakh.

The research team says trials of the prototype lab—constructed heart have been successful on small animals and the gadget is being perfected on goats. The institute has applied for permission to conduct human trials.

The Total Artificial Heart (TAH) — said to be the first such in the country — has been developed by a team of scientists at IIT-Kgp's school of medical science and technology.

After four years of painstaking research, the scientists say their creation is better and far more affordable than the first artificial heart developed in the US, which showed a ``high rate failure'' and at Rs 30 lakh, beyond the reach of the common man.

The inventors hope to fit the heart into an ailing patient within a few months, once permissions from the Indian Council of Medical Research come through. The unique 13—chamber heart is working fine in small animals, said a member of the team. Human tests are to be conducted at Medical College and Hospital (MCH), Kolkata.
Senior cardiac surgeons — Madhusudan Pal, Bhaskar Ukil, Tarun Saha and Kalishankar Das from MCH and Rajiv Narang of AIIMS, Delhi — will conduct the human trials.

Warm Water after your Meal !!!

{{Potd/2006-08-30 (en)}}Image via Wikipedia

It's about the warm water after your meal. This makes sense....

The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals...not cold water... maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!!

Nothing to lose, everything to gain... For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer.

It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this article n shares it with 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this... It could save your life!!!

Please be a true friend and share this article to all your friends you care about.
